ABOUT

The Psalterium Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes sacred choral music and general music literacy toward a renewal of Catholic liturgical music in Maine and a resurgence of singing among ordinary people.

Ensembles focus on chant and sacred choral music drawn from the Church’s nearly 2500 year tradition of prayer and worship.

The Institute offers ensemble singing, music classes, parish workshops, private instruction, consultation and more.

ENSEMBLES

Ensemble Praecentores

  • 6-8 professional/semiprofessional singers

  • Repertoire is mostly early sacred choral music (Medieval - Baroque).

  • Rehearsals as needed.

Chamber Choir

  • 18-24 skilled amateur singers.

  • Repertoire is drawn from Medieval - 21st century.

  • Rehearses weekly.

  • Auditions in September/January.

Schola Cantorum

  • Choir for boys who demonstrate musical skill and discipline.

  • Music is a cappella and accompanied, Medieval - 21st C.

  • Rehearses twice a week.

  • Rolling auditions.

Magnificat

  • Choir for girls who demonstrate musical skill and discipline.

  • Music is a cappella and accompanied, Medieval - 21st C.

  • Rehearses once a week.

  • Rolling auditions.

Training Choir

  • Prepares children for Schola Cantorum and Magnificat.

  • Focus is on basic musical and behaviorial skills.

  • Rehearses weekly.

  • Rolling auditions.

  • Requirements: Must be able to read.
